Our daily work with healthcare professionals and healthcare organisations gives us a valuable perspective of the opioid dependence treatment (ODT) landscape and the challenges and obstacles that can stand in the way of people accessing the treatment they need.
We are fortunate to witness many examples of outstanding work to develop alternative delivery models, that aim to optimise local resources and improve access for patients.
GP Shared Care
Whilst GP Shared Care is not a new concept, its availability in relation to drug and alcohol addiction services isn’t widespread across the UK. Yet, as with many other health issues, there are many advantages to treating people with opioid dependence treatment within their communities.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board in Wales has pioneered the development of a GP Shared Care service for Buvidal patients across its region and has seen many direct benefits to both service providers and service users as a result.
In the following video, Dr Mel Bagshaw, a GP based in Cardiff, shares her experience and insight in establishing and delivering a GP shared care network, specifically for Buvidal.
Pharmacy Administration
Pharmacies already play a vital role in the delivery of care to patients receiving opioid dependence treatment and they continue to do so in the supply and dispensing of Buvidal. However, pharmacies have the potential to play an even greater role by administering Buvidal on-site, thereby bringing access to treatment closer to patients and avoiding the cost and time associated with travelling to drug treatment services. This in turn adds to a patient’s recovery capital.
Whilst administering injections is not new to many pharmacies familiar with implementing vaccine programmes, delivering Buvidal does carry specific requirements and responsibilities.

In-service Administration
Whilst community based administration can offer advantages in terms of improving access and convenience for patients, on-site administration of Buvidal within drug treatment services themselves is a change in working practice that can present some initial challenges.
Camurus can guide you through the steps required to help make this transition as straightforward as possible.
We can support with basic infrastructure requirements such as controlled drug cabinets for secure storage and help through the process of applying for a Home Office licence.
We will provide comprehensive training for prescribers, nurses and recovery workers to ensure your team is capable and ready to not only administer Buvidal but is also armed with the information necessary to educate and support patients at each stage of their treatment journey.
